The Naked Man: the artwork

Mark 14 52 - Michael Donnelly 2010

“Mark 14:52” 2010, Oil and acrylic on linen, 77 x 122 cm.

The painting that accompanies the series is by Australian artist Michael Donnelly. Here is the story behind the piece:

“This incident was first brought to my attention by H V Morton’s ‘Who Moved the Stone?’ many years ago. In the 1990s I did some initial work depicting the young man, not having seen a representation of the event before. However it wasn’t till encountering Stanley Spencer’s first version of ‘The Betrayal” in the UK in 2007 that I decided to realise the project, taking a lead from the Cookham painter.”
